Research evidence suggests that language learning supports a child’s general understanding and language development. Consequently all pupils have an entitlement to foreign language learning. At Riversides School, we teach mainly French but aim as well to offer insights into other cultures around the world. Whilst learning another language, pupils can experience real successes and gain a sense of achievement that will help them with other subjects learning. It develops skills that can be applied to learning any other language. Those skills are actually life long learning skills such as memorizing techniques and problem solving skills. We believe that learning a language, which combines the intellectual with the practical, is efficient only when there is enjoyment and challenge. In class, pupils are encouraged to actively respond through the use of games or by contact with the real things (such as food or songs). Our resources are authentic and their diversity is a stimulant for curiosity. With meaningful activities we aim at giving a sense of ownership to the pupils of the work produced. It is often fun but our pupils are also creative, with frequent use of an up to date computer equipment and therefore, demonstrating their ICT skills. Thanks to the enthusiasm and motivation of the classes, we work in a friendly atmosphere, and pupils care and listen to one another. They are learning to show their knowledge and put forward their opinions. Soon here, we will be able to download some of the work produced that will show what and how we have learnt so far in this academic year. |
